Scaling Carbon Markets through Improved Governance
A well-designed voluntary carbon market has the potential to deliver billions of dollars into climate solutions and reduce billions of tons of carbon emissions by 2050. Yet, current standards and rules are often confusing or sometimes lacking in rigor.
The Earth Fund supports two initiatives addressing voluntary carbon market governance to ensure high quality on both the supply and demand side. On the supply side, the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market will establish and implement a widely trusted high quality threshold standard for voluntary carbon credits. On the demand side, the Voluntary Carbon Market Integrity Initiative will develop a code of practice for the legitimate use of carbon credits against ambitious voluntary climate goals.
